It's Only Words, 2022
Australia has an ageing population and disturbing cases of elder abuse prompted the Commonwealth Government to establish the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety in 2018. This exhibition was my response.
Both my parents died in aged care. They were well looked after, but so many were not, and are still not. Thousands of allegations of ill treatment emerged as I followed proceedings. Commissioners heard from the elderly, family members, aged care workers, service providers, peak bodies, advocates and experts. Stories of cruelty, neglect and greed seemed never ending. Thousands of submissions were made and hundreds of voices were heard in person. For this reason I placed testimony at the heart of the exhibition, embroidering ninety quotes on donated white handkerchiefs, and supplementing this with my own creative reaction to the injustice.
Part of this body of work will be exhibited at the Australian Association of Gerentology Conference in Alice Springs in November 2025.
